Just worth mentioning that the blackcock who was spooked by the goshawk last week seems to be overcoming his cowardice and spent part of this afternoon lekking on the farmhouse lawn. By the time I got down to see him, he had given up and was sulking amongst the snowdrops, but at least he’s getting over the worst of the trauma. I hope that in a few days time, he’ll be back up on the hill each morning at first light, drawing in greyhens and getting the job done.
It’s a shame that he’s on his own, but it’s now been almost two years since he first appeared at the farm buildings, and he’s had several greyhens come in to see him during that time. It may not be classic lekking behaviour, but he’s not a lost cause.
