Tracking Cuckoos

A cuckoo on the Chayne – where's he going?

I don’t make a habit of linking to other websites, but I must admit that I have been enjoying the BTO’s Observations of a sample of five cuckoos which were radio tagged in Norfolk last week. The five birds are plotted daily on an interactive map, and it looks like we have finally found a real use for Google Earth.

Three of the cuckoos have stayed more or less where they were tagged, one has headed a couple of hundred miles south, and the fifth cuckoo (named Clement) has already headed into France. Their progress is updated every day, and although it has nothing to do with grouse, I think it’s fascinating.

I heard about the project on BBC 4’s programme Saving Species, which, like most other wildlife documentaries, only gets interesting when it deals with British wildlife.

    ‘I don’t make a habit of linking to other websites’ I just wondered why not? You’re an excellent writer with a fascinating story developing, the cross traffic of links is how google places you. I think there is a HOOJ audience out there for what your doing, if only they knew you were there.

    Sorry to be a buttinski I’m just curious as to your motivation.

    I don’t know why I don’t link to other websites. I started writing this blog as a record for myself and my friends, and while I’m thrilled that so many people are interested, I have never given much thought to spreading the word. You’re probably right, and I’ll maybe start thinking about putting more links in.

    Its my pleasure, I’m a fan of what you’re doing and your writing. There are a whole host of American birding bloggers who’d love what you’re doing. Here on the isles of Albion we’re a litte under represented in the bloggersphere. But you’d certainly get a lot of support and maybe some future customers
