Hay in May

Seven months of feeding!

Horrified to find that we’re now well into May and I’m still having to feed the cows. Grass growth has simply stalled since the wind got stuck in the northeast, and the landscape is horribly parched. I can hardly complain too much as the heifers now only require a single bale of hay each day, but they certainly look forward to my arrival and come galloping down with their mouths to the fore. I bought three hundred bales of hay this winter and imagined that I had over-ordered, but I hadn’t banked on having to feed the beasts for almost seven months.

Fingers crossed that the weather will soon break and give the grass the jump start it so sorely requires.
