Moving Moorlands

A large amount of heather
A large amount of heather prior to transportation

Worth recording a hot day on the hill near Bankfoot gathering heather turves in order to dress a pen of ptarmigan at the Scottish Game Fair. It turns out that digging 12′ x 24′ of heather by hand and moving it fifteen miles is actually quite an undertaking, and I am grateful for help from friends for getting it done without too much swearing.

It was a beautiful day on the hill, and while this ground is known for its resurging black grouse population, nothing was moving in the shimmering heat. The Heather Trust will be at the Game Fair throughout this coming weekend, and it would be great to meet any readers of this blog who happen to be passing.
