Early Brood

Young blackbirds in the garden already

As if the early summer weather wasn’t obvious enough, I spotted a fledged family of blackbirds in the garden this afternoon. What they are doing up and about so early in the year is a mystery, but the two young birds certainly seemed full of the joys of spring, greedy and squeaking like demons. They would squat in the long grass and wait for the cock blackbird, who brought them a constant stream of worms.

When I stepped out to photograph them, the young blackbirds buzzed unceremoniously into a dogwood at the back of the garden. This is the earliest that I have ever heard of black bird chicks getting out of the nest, and I hope that they’ll have a productive summer. The little buggers seemed to like hiding in the long grass of the garden, so maybe I will use that as an excuse not to mow the lawn for another week or two. I could call it set aside.
